Music from two millennia comes together in Solstice, from ancient chant to music specially commissioned. Astonishing compositions breathe new life into ancient instruments – hurdy-gurdy, oboe and didgeridoo; instruments of the earth in music of mystic spirituality. Computer technology features too, in the combination of sounds from a Cambridge choir with British birdsong recorded during the summer solstice. Solstice creates an imaginary soundscape of music for ancient rites. The ‘roofless past’ of the mind creates patterns in music drawn from the earth and the heavens and celebrates the power of the human spirit and its interpretation of the world it finds around itself.
